The Connection

Before they conquered the ice,
they walked these grounds.

In 1901 and 1910, members of the most famous Antarctic expeditions in history stayed at Middleton Grange as guests of Sir Charles Bowen. Scott, Shackleton, and Wilson — names that would become legend — prepared for their journeys to the unknown right here, where our school now stands.

Today, our four houses carry their legacy forward. Every competition, every challenge, every triumph echoes the courage of these remarkable explorers.

Shackleton House

Sir Ernest Shackleton

1874 – 1922

"Difficulties are just things to overcome, after all."
Endurance Leadership Resilience

Known as "The Boss," Shackleton led the legendary Endurance expedition. When his ship was crushed by ice, he guided all 28 men to safety across 800 miles of treacherous ocean. Not a single life was lost.

Dr. Edward Wilson

1872 – 1912

Creativity Compassion Excellence

"Uncle Bill" was a physician, naturalist, and artist whose beautiful watercolours documented Antarctica. He led the "Worst Journey in the World" — a winter expedition in -60°C temperatures to collect Emperor penguin eggs.

Bowen House

Sir Charles Bowen

1830 – 1917

"Education for all children, regardless of background."
Service Education Hospitality

The Father of New Zealand Education and owner of Middleton Grange. Bowen welcomed the Antarctic explorers to his home and championed free education for all children through the landmark 1877 Education Act.

Captain Robert Scott

1868 – 1912

"We took risks, we knew we took them; things have come out against us."
Courage Science Sacrifice

"Scott of the Antarctic" led two major expeditions to the frozen continent. His team reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912, only to find Amundsen had arrived first. They perished on the return journey, still collecting scientific specimens until the very end.

1850

The Bowens Arrive

Charles Bowen arrives in Canterbury on the Charlotte Jane, one of the First Four Ships.

1901

Discovery Expedition Visits

Scott, Wilson, and Shackleton stay at Middleton Grange before departing for Antarctica.

1910

Terra Nova Expedition

Scott's polar party stays at Middleton Grange. They depart from Lyttelton on 29 November.

1912

South Pole Reached

Scott, Wilson, and three companions reach the Pole — finding Amundsen had arrived 34 days earlier.

1914-16

Endurance Epic

Shackleton's ship is crushed by ice. He leads all 28 men to safety in one of history's greatest survival stories.

1964

School Founded

Middleton Grange School is established on the historic property.

1967

House System Begins

Four houses created: Scott, Shackleton, Wilson, and Bowen — honouring the Antarctic heritage.

2022

Endurance Found

Shackleton's ship discovered on the seafloor, 107 years after sinking — remarkably preserved.
